Es gibt zwei kleine Tische an denen jeweils einer von zwei Performer kniend sitzen. Der Raum ist dunkel, an jedem der Tische leuchtet eine Lampe. Im Hintergrund hängt zwischen ihnen ein Objekt, das ein Video zeigt. An einem Tisch sitz eine Performerin und mischt Lehm mit Wasser. Sie gießt die Masse in eine Tonschale und bestreut sie mit blauem Pigment. Sie wiederholt den Prozess immer wieder über einen Zeitraum von ca. 1,5 Stunden. Die sich ständig durch Lehm, Wasser und Pigment verändernde Skulptur wird mit einer Kamera abgefilmt und auf einem runden Objekt, welches als eine Art Leinwand dient, projiziert.
An dem anderen Tisch sitz ein Performer ebenfalls mit einer Tonschale, die darin enthaltene Erde ist trocken. Er spielt mit ihnen, bewegt sie, fügt welche hinzu, nimmt andere Teile weg. Unter der Tonschale sind Kontaktmikrophone verbunden, ein Klang, der über den Controller verändert wird, entsteht. Eine Symphonie von Erdklängen, blauem Pigment und Lehm.
A handful of earth thematisiert den Verlust von Berührung mit der Erde und dem daraus resultierenden Zustand, ihrer Beständigkeit und ihrer gleichzeitigen Flüchtigkeit.
Im Rahmen des “Guter Stoff Festival 2022“ ist gemeinsam mit den Künstler*innen Evarts Svilpe, Celia Tort Pujol und Benjamin Grau die vierteilige Performance „If I was a pancake“ entstanden. „A handfull of earth“ ist ein Teil des Gesamtwerkes. Die Performance wurde im Rahmen des Festivals am 27.05.2022 in der Niehler Freiheit in Köln präsentiert.
There are two small tables, each with one of two performers kneeling at them. The room is dark, with a lamp illuminating each table. In the background, hanging between them, is an object displaying a video. One performer sits at a table, mixing clay with water. She pours the mixture into a clay bowl and sprinkles it with blue pigment. She repeats this process over a period of about 1.5 hours. The constantly changing sculpture, altered by clay, water, and pigment, is filmed with a camera and projected onto a round object serving as a kind of canvas.
At the other table, another performer sits with a clay bowl containing dry earth. He plays with it, moves it around, adds some, removes other parts. Under the clay bowl, contact microphones are connected, generating sounds that are manipulated via a controller. A symphony of earth sounds, blue pigment, and clay emerges.
"A Handful of Earth" addresses the loss of connection with the earth and the resulting state, its permanence, and simultaneous transience.
As part of the "Guter Stoff Festival 2022," the four-part performance "If I was a pancake" was created in collaboration with artists Evarts Svilpe, Celia Tort Pujol, and Benjamin Grau. "A Handful of Earth" is one part of the overall work. The performance was presented as part of the festival on May 27, 2022, at Niehler Freiheit in Cologne.
